4 +1 Super Powers that advance equity within an organizationÂ
Accountable leadership is essential to advancing racial equity within organizations. Developing these four competencies is important for accountable leadership.
1. Self-awareness: Be aware of your own biases and privileges. Recognize the ways in which they may be perpetuating systemic racism, and be willing to challenge your own assumptions and beliefs.
2. Commitment to equity: Be vocal about your commitment to creating a workplace that’s fair and just. Make a clear and public commitment to advancing racial equity. Take action: hold yourself and others accountable for creating a more equitable workplace.
3. Collaboration: Advancing racial equity requires collaboration across the organization. Build relationships and work collaboratively with stakeholders across the organization, including employees, clients, and partners.
4. Continuous learning and improvement: Keep learning. Educate yourself and your team, and constantly evaluate, tweak, and improve. Accountable leaders need to be committed to ongoing education and training and to continuously evaluating and improving their strategies and practices.
And ok, a 5th, Persevere: Try, try, try, and keep trying learning, and growing. Leaders who develop these four superpowers can create more inclusive and equitable organizations that benefit everyone.
